How do I configure BOOT.INI settings for a dual boot?

I want to dual boot Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB drive with Windows XP already on my computer. Do I have to check any boot options or anything with BOOT.INI? When I reboot my computer, it goes to a black screen with "Boot error" or something like that in gray letters.
